Wolverine Community School Visit
Yesterday, Sparking Literacy sponsored its first official author visit. Kyle Prue hosted an assembly for 4th-12th graders that was proof of the power of our Sparking Literacy partnerships. Christ Child Society of Northern Michigan donated the 128 books needed to provide every middle and high school student with a copy of the author's book, The Sparks. Several members of the Christ Child Board of Directors attended the assembly and personally handed out the books to the students after the assembly.
19-year-old, Kyle Prue, shared stories from his life, his journey into publishing and his struggles in middle school to see the way forward. His message, "Life Is Like Music" emphasized the importance of enjoying the journey and inspiring teens to follow their dreams now rather than waiting for some imaginary finish line down the road. His message clearly resonated with the students who were rapt during the presentation. The Q&A session is always a favorite and the crowd was full of eager hands trying to get picked to ask questions. The kids had Prue doing everything from answering serious questions to doing the dance "the whip" or beat boxing. One child even asked how many push ups Prue could do in 10 seconds. Prue happily dropped to the floor to answer this burning question. 12 push ups.
After the assembly, the students lined up for photos and to receive their own autographed copy of The Sparks. Many stopped to give a short interview to the videographer, and the same message was consistently repeated. These kids were inspired to follow their own dreams, because if one of their peers could do it, why not them?
A huge thank you to the Christ Child Society for making such a positive impact on the lives of these students!! What a wonderful group of women too. We are so grateful.
